Stone Mountain Park

It was K’s opening day of baseball and being the sports fanatics we are, that is something we could not miss. But every state park within two hours of the game was booked on this beautiful spring-like weekend. Not to worry, there was room at Stone Mountain. Although we did not get one of the prime waterside campsites, we snagged a nice pull through site in the more woodsy laid back blue loop right across from the water front sites (#349).

Two sets of grandkids came to visit for a hike, dinner, and S’mores one night. That’s what it is all about here, visiting with family and enjoying nature.

But back to baseball. With the last two years of COVID times, K, like many youngsters has missed out on the early T ball learning phase of baseball. So we nervously (and almost tearfully) watched him strike out at his first at bat. But he was persistent and kept his chin up. When he eventually got a solid hit, he did a happy dance at each base.

The campground at Stone Mountain has decent cell service as well as Wifi, so I was able to work some each day. We spent a peaceful afternoon and evening watching kayakers and geese on the lake and watching the sun set over the mountain. We were rewarded with a new beautiful picture every 30 minutes. We have already scoped out the best water view campsites for our next visit and can’t wait to return.

Highlight: Just before we left, we took the high-speed Swiss cable car 825 feet above ground to the top of the mountain, past the world’s largest relief carving, above the hawks and eagles riding the wind currents, to the bare rock face at the top.

Problems: Atlanta traffic is never fun, especially when towing!
