Cowpens National Battlefield

After our post Christmas family trip to Lake Keowee, we took the Cherokee National Scenic Highway north to Cowpens NB. We saw three turkeys on the way in to the park.

The average continental soldier was 5’ 5’. There were metal replicas of the soldiers peeking out from the heavy fog throughout our walk on the 1 mile loop trail.

It was cold and damp. Somewhat eerily, it was also cold and damp 239 years ago on the day of the Battle of Cowpens in January of 1781. This Revolutionary War battle was said to be a turning point in the U.S. forces’ reconquest of South Carolina from the British.

We also followed the 3.8 mile auto loop of the battlefield area. We particularly enjoyed the circa 1828 Robert Scruggs Log House.
